Here's a new interview with Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth!
This session was aired earlier this evening by Crew Rock Radio, in anticipation of Opeth's upcoming show at Bloodstock festival on August 9th. It's an open and honest conversation, and Mikael seems to be on good form as they talk through festivals and other metal bands.
Thanks to Crew Rock for airing this, and to Iro Kalligeri for the incredible photo (taken during Opeth's most recent concert in Athens on July 3rd).
Lastly, apologies for the ten-second gap around the 3:00 mark, when my internet connection briefly cut out. I've minimised this in the final edit, missing only the interviewer starting to ask about fan-picked setlists.

Before Opeth recorded Ghost Reveries, Mikael Åkerfeldt recorded an album's worth of demos. Some of this music was used on later albums (e.g. the "boogie" breakdown in The Lotus Eater), while other pieces have been lost to time. I believe that opeth " fans" shitting on the other albums simply didn't listen to them. Because how can you listen to them and dislike them when they are genuinely masterpieces, even though they sound very different.
I don't care if this band ever return to using double-kick drums, distorted riffs and growling. I just want them to write more melancholic epics like they did in their early days. Imagine another 15-20 minute suite with all their accumulated musical/songwriting experience.

@mrbavenger Right! The only engineering work was to isolate the music, level, and master. The rest of my knowledge of this track has come from interviews and discussions over the years. No secret trades or anything for this one.

Watershed II and those demos being (mostly) lost is a huge tragedy. I hope one day he realizes that the world deserves to hear them. Also, the first part is pure magic!
@beneath_the_woods Sadly, the Watershed II demos are gone forever. Mikael confirmed that he deleted all associated files, and therefore that we'll never hear them. :(

I was blessed to grow up in the 70's.... and spent most of my youth going to and experiencing live music! And I caught Thin Lizzy twice!! One show was Thin Lizzy and Foghat on the same bill!😂😂 I was hitching rides to shows before I was old enough to even get my learners permit!!! Lol What a great decade in music to be alive in!!
